ABOUT US

© Scottish Historic Buildings Trust 2017

SHBT holds a property portfolio of unique buildings that we have developed and actively manage and maintain. Some buildings are fully rented out to long-term tenants others are divided into individual office suites and are available to rent. These range from offices units and creative industries workspaces to community halls and facilities.

We have most recently acquired Custom House in Leith and are currently fundraising for its restoration. Under our tenancy, it has already become a thriving arts hub filled with small shops and studios. Click here to find out more about whats on at Custom House.

CURRENT PROJECTS

The Trust takes complex history building preservation projects from inception to completion, drawing on over 35 years of project experience.

Entirely dependent on grants and philanthropy the Trust draws on support from the local communities with whom it works, it’s friends and supporters and funding bodies to retain key buildings at risk of terminal neglect. It ensures these properties are then properly cared for and have sustainable futures by giving them new uses and purpose, whilst also nurturing interest in Scotland’s built heritage.

We offer office space for hire, meeting room bookings, community event space hire, together with leaning events and tours at certain properties.

WHAT WE DO

Our learning programmes comprise of building tours and interpretation, conservation approaches, local heritage trails, schools sessions, research study events and evening talks. We work in partnership with other education and heritage providers to offer a diverse selection of classes and activities for a wide range of audiences.

Our learning activities are based in the Patrick Geddes Learning Centre in Edinburgh,  click here to find out more about the centre and whats on.

LEARNING PROGRAMME

SHBT’s success is due to our collective skills in building conservation, architecture and project management, and through collaborative working to identify and secure a sustainable end use for neglected historic buildings.

As such, we are often best placed to provide consultancy to communities, Councils, trusts and charities on a way forward for their own building preservation project. If you have a project you would like to talk to us about please get in touch.
